City Introduction

Oviedo is a city in northern Spain. It is the capital of the region of Asturias, which is formally a principality. The Kingdom of Asturias was founded by the Visigoth Pelaguis in 720 after a confrontation with the Moors. At that time, the present Oviedo was uninhabited. Two monks founded the city in 761. After a few years, the city had a church and a royal residence, and Oviedo quickly became the capital and a city that established itself with a cathedral on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. Part of the development stagnated, however, when the capital was moved to León after the death of Alfonso III in 910. Over the centuries, however, construction continued in Oviedo, which also became a university city.

Oviedo’s old town is atmospheric with its narrow streets and cozy squares. In the center is Plaza de la Catedral, where you can see Oviedo’s great cathedral. It was built in its original version during the rule of King Fruela I from 781, and it became the seat of a bishop in 810. The current church is a large extension that was begun in 1388 and where the church tower was built in the 1520s. In the church, important relics from the history of the Asturian monarchy are stored, and you can see La Capilla del Rey Casto, the pantheon of the Asturian kings. Here are the graves of many of the historical kings and queens.

You can visit the old 7th century Iglesia de San Tirso in the Plaza de la Catedral as well, where the Art Museum of Asturias is located. At the museum you can enjoy paintings from Spain with a focus on Asturian artists. There are also sculptures and other art forms here. There are several interesting museums close by. You can see religious art at the Museo de la Iglesia de Oviedo and at the Museo Arqueológico de Asturias, several archaeological finds and cultural history from the Principality of Asturias are displayed. The archaeological museum is partly housed in the former San Vicente Benedictine monastery.

There are many other attractions in the city. In the Plaza de la Constitución square you can see the city’s beautiful town hall from 1662, and you can experience the Mercado de El Fontán market, which dates from 1885. In more recent times, Oviedo is known for the convention and exhibition center Palacio de Congresos de Oviedo, which was designed by Santiago Calatrava and opened in 2011. You can also go a few kilometers to the northwest, where Santa María del Naranco is located. It is a building from the pre-Romanesque period in the 8th century, which served as a representation hall for a royal palace. Later, the building was used as a church, and today it is included in UNESCO’s list of world cultural heritage.
