City Map

City Introduction

Pécs is a city in southwestern Hungary, and it is the capital of this region. The area has been inhabited for several thousand years, and the Romans established Sopianae in the early 100s. A few hundred years later, the city became an important Christian city. From the beginning of the 18th century, Pécs experienced a new period of growth for trade, industry and culture. A new town hall was built during this time and an academy was founded in the city.

Today, you can experience a fine old district with buildings from recent centuries. The square Széchenyi tér is the center of Pécs, and you can clearly see the long history of the city on the architecture at the square. The dominant building is the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which was constructed in the 16th century as a mosque. It happened in the time after the area had been conquered by the Muslim Ottomans, and although the mosque was converted into a church, you can still notice the visible Islamic architecture.

There are other mosques in the city from the Ottoman era as well, and of course there are also many churches in the city. The most impressive is St. Peter and Paul Basilica, whose origins go back to the 4th century Roman times. The neo-Romanesque exterior of the basilica dates from a rebuilding at the end of the 1800s, while the beautiful interior of the church dates to the Middle Ages. To the west of the church, you can see the fortress tower Barbakán, which was built in the 15th century as part of the defense of the bishop’s seat.

Immediately south of Pécs’ basilica is the city’s most famous attraction. It is Cella Septichora, a preserved early Christian cemetery, which is included in UNESCO’s list of world cultural heritage. The site is unique due to the many impressive burial chambers, which were mainly built by wealthy families. Fine mausoleums were built on top of the burial chambers, and today you can visit the cemetery and experience the constructions and their preserved decorations.

Budapest, Hungary

Budapest

Budapest is one of the grand capitals along the Danube River, and its magnificent history dates back to Roman times and the military outpost Aquincum. There are still remains of excavated facilities to be seen from the Roman era, and since then, one of the most beautiful cities in Central Europe has grown on both sides of the river.

The hilly Buda district stands opposite the flat Pest, and the two boroughs are located on either side of the Danube, which wind through the Hungarian capital. The city is extremely rich in monuments from all periods over the last 2,000 years, and combined with its very beautiful location it offers ample opportunity for many great sights and interesting activities.
