City Introduction

Perpignan is a southern French city that is the administrative seat of the department of Pyrénées-Orientales. The city is located a few kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea. Perpignan’s history dates to Roman times, while the modern city was founded in the 9th century. It soon developed into the residence of the Counts of Roussillon. In 1172, however, Count Girard II bequeathed the land to the Counts of Barcelona, and the following time Perpignan was subject to changing dominions.

In 1197, the city gained partial autonomy, and with the Treaty of Corbeil in 1258, Louis IX of France renounced feudal rights over the region, which passed to James I of Aragon. When the Kingdom of Mallorca arose in 1276, Perpignan became the capital of the continental part of the kingdom. That status boosted trade and production in the city. There were alternating periods of Catalan, French and Spanish rule before Perpignan became part of France in 1659 and has been so ever since.

Today, Perpignan has an old district with narrow streets and lovely squares that invite you to walk in a southern French atmosphere between the sights. Place de la République is the name of the central square, where several cafés with outdoor seating almost call out for a break enjoying city life. From here you can walk through the streets to the north to the Castillet building, which is a castle-like fortified city gate, where you can visit the museum Musée catalan des arts et tradition populaires.

You can also explore the Basilique-Cathédrale de Saint-Jean-Baptiste, which is Perpignan’s impressive cathedral, which was built from 1324. It was constructed during the rule of King Sancho of Majorca, and it shows in the architecture, which is Catalan Gothic. The church was completed in the 15th century with rich decoration, and to the south of it you can see Campo Santo. Campo Santo is the city’s former cemetery, and the facility was laid out before the current cathedral.

There are several good options for tours and sights in Perpignan. One of the most popular places is the promenade along the stream Basse, where you can go to Les Halles Vauban, a modern market hall. You can also make it to the city’s citadel, a colossal structure behind solid walls south of the center. In the citadel you will find the Palais des Rois de Majorque, a Gothic residence castle from the time of the kings of Mallorca in Perpignan.
