City Introduction

Rochester is a city in the state New York, located on the southern shore of Lake Ontario. It was founded in the early 19th century, where Rochester quickly grew into a bustling industrial hub, thanks to the completion of the Erie Canal in 1825. The waterway transformed the city into a major transportation and trade center, attracting a lot of immigrants from Europe. The city’s early economy was driven by flour mills, earning it the nickname Flour City. Later, it became known as the Flower City due to its flourishing nursery and seed industry.

From the 1900s to today, Rochester has experienced significant transformations. In the early 20th century, the city thrived as an industrial powerhouse, home to major companies like Eastman Kodak, Xerox, and Bausch & Lomb. These corporations drove economic growth and innovation, particularly in photography and imaging technologies. However, the latter half of the century saw a decline in manufacturing, leading to economic challenges and population loss. Despite these setbacks, Rochester has reinvented itself as a center for education, healthcare, and technology. The presence of institutions like the University of Rochester and the Rochester Institute of Technology has revitalized the city.

You can head out on a sightseeing tour in the commercial downtown Rochester, which is concentrated around Main Street and State Street on both sides of the Genesee River. You will see a mix of architecture in these streets, and there are some notable buildings like the Times Square Building. It is an art deco skyscraper from 1929-1930 at 79 meters with the so-called Wings of Progress as top decoration. Close by is the art deco style Reynolds Arcade Building fra 1933, and a bit north along State Street is the Kodak Tower from 1914. It was built as part of the Eastman Kodak Headquarters.

Speaking about Eastman Kodak, one of the attractions in Rochester is about one of the most significant figures in city’s history, George Eastman, the founder of Eastman Kodak Company. His contributions to photography and film revolutionized the industry and left a lasting legacy in the city. The George Eastman Museum, located in his former home, is the world’s oldest photography museum and one of the oldest film archives. It offers visitors a glimpse into the history of photography and the life of one of Rochester’s most influential residents.

The Susan B. Anthony Museum & House is another house museum in Rochester. This historic home was the residence of the famous women’s rights activist Susan B. Anthony and is now a museum dedicated to her life and work. On a visit you can learn about Anthony’s role in the women’s suffrage movement, and you can see the room where she was famously arrested for voting in the 1872 Presidential Election. If you are looking for art, the Memorial Art Gallery, affiliated with the University of Rochester, houses an impressive collection of art spanning 5,000 years.

The Strong National Museum of Play is a popular choice for families with kids of all ages. The focus of the museum is the history of play, and exhibits are themed to video games, television shows, comic books, train rides, and much more. It is the place to explore things like the eGameRevolution. You can continue to the Rochester Museum & Science Center with interactive experiences within technology and science like simulators and a world of light. There are also local and regional themes like the industrial revolution at the museum.

If you want some nature and natural beauty, there are choices as well. The Genesee Riverway Trail is a path along the Genesee River leading toward parklands south of downtown Rochester. You can enjoy the natural beauty of Highland Park, which was designed by renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. The park is home to the annual festivals like the Lilac Festival, which showcases hundreds of varieties of lilacs. The park also features beautiful gardens, walking trails, and the Lamberton Conservatory.

Buffalo, New York, United States, USA

Buffalo

Buffalo is the second largest city in the US state of New York. The region was explored several times in the 17th century, and over time a fort was built here. However, it took until the end of the 18th century before a small trading post was established on the site where Joseph Ellicott founded Buffalo in 1801.

At first the town was called New Amsterdam, but it was called Buffalo after the river Buffalo Creek, and it soon became the town’s official name. In 1810, there were 1,500 inhabitants in Buffalo, a number that increased continuously throughout the 19th century, not least due to industrialization and Buffalo’s strategic location for trade and transport. Industry and transportation boomed, and in 1901 the city hosted The Pan-American Exposition.

Niagara Falls, USA Canada

Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is the name of some of the world’s most famous and visited waterfalls. The mighty falls are a wonder of nature and an experience for the senses that you will always remember. Every second, three million liters of water flow over the edge of the waterfall, which is located on the border between the United States and Canada.

There is a city on both sides of the border and thus the falls, both are called Niagara Falls, and the two cities are the centres of the large tourism to the area. There are lots of activities and hotels here, so you can get a lot more than the Niagara Falls experience from a trip here.

Niagara Falls is a group of three waterfalls located as the southern end of the Niagara Gorge, which the Niagara River has cut out of the underground over time. The largest of the waterfalls is the iconic Horseshoe Falls, located like a horseshoe with cascades of water on the very border between Canada and the United States.

In addition to Horseshoe Falls, Niagara Falls consists of American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls, both of which are smaller than Horsehoe Falls. Both of the smaller falls are on the American side of the border. Between Horseshoe Falls and Bridal Veil Falls is Goat Island, and between Bridal Veil Falls and American Falls is Luna Island.

You can see all three falls from the Canadian as well as the American side of the Niagara River. From Canada there is a panoramic view of the falls, and from here you get the best view of Horseshoe Falls and American Falls. From the US you can get very close to all the falls, and there is access to both Goat Island and Luna Island.

The Niagara River connects Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, and Niagara Falls is located en route between the lakes. The height of the fall is up to 57 meters, and Horseshoe Falls is the most watery in North America. The fall is 790 meters wide, while American Falls, as the second largest, is 320 meters wide.

Geologically, the Niagara River has cut through the subsurface all the way from Lake Ontario, and the waterfalls at Niagara Falls continue to erode about 30 centimeters of rock per year towards Lake Erie. When this process is complete, the falls have reached Lake Erie, at which point the waterfalls cease to exist.

Albany, New York, United States, USA

Albany

Albany is the capital city of the state of New York. It has a rich history that dates back to the early 17th century. The area was originally inhabited by the Mohican and Iroquois tribes before European exploration. In 1609, English explorer Henry Hudson claimed the area for the Dutch, leading to the establishment of Fort Nassau in 1614 and Fort Orange in 1624.

These trading posts attracted settlers, and the village of Beverwijck was founded around Fort Orange. In 1664, the English took control and renamed the settlement Albany, in honor of the Duke of Albany, the future James II of England. The city was officially chartered in 1686, making it one of the oldest continuously chartered cities in the United States.
