City Introduction

Rotterdam is the second largest city in the Netherlands, and it is known for several things; not least for a glorious maritime history and Europe’s largest port. The area has been developed from the city center and all the way to the mouth of the Nieuwe Maas in the North Sea west of the city.

The maritime experiences make their mark on the city, which offers many lovely places along the water and around old port facilities. In addition, there are some excellent maritime museums and of course the opportunity to take a cruise on the harbor with one of the city’s many cruise boats.

Rotterdam is also a city with exciting modern architecture, and it is thus an interesting contrast to, for example, old Amsterdam. The Kubuswonungen homes, the Erasmusbrug bridge and the unforgettable Markthal are good examples that form the city together with a few remains from the original Rotterdam.

The area around the Dutch metropolis offers many opportunities for trips out of the city. Here are urban highlights like Amsterdam and Antwerp and you can also enjoy the Dutch countryside with canals and mills. The city of The Hague and the beaches of Scheveningen are also close by.

Top Attractions

St Lawrence Church, Rotterdam

St Lawrence Church
Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk

This large church stands as the only preserved church from the Middle Ages in Rotterdam. The church is Protestant and was built between 1449 and 1525, and in 1621 a wooden spire was built on the tower according to Hendrick de Keyser’s designs. However, the spire had to be torn down again in 1645 due to the poor quality of the wood used.

The Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk was the first building in Rotterdam to be built entirely of stone. It became Protestant with the Reformation that took place here in 1572. The church stood beautifully until May 14, 1940, when German attacks during World War II damaged the building so much that only the tower and church walls remained.

After the end of the war, there were thoughts of demolishing the still-standing part of the church, but Queen Wilhelmina opposed it, and instead the Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk was rebuilt, which was a symbol of the city’s will to rebuild. Queen Juliana laid the foundation stone for the restoration, which was completed in 1958.

Old Port
Oude Haven

Oude Haven is the name of Rotterdam’s old harbor basin, where today you can experience a lovely environment with an atmosphere and architecture that stands in contrast to many other places in modern Rotterdam. The harbor environment is also home to a number of old ships.

Oude Haven is one of the city’s popular places for both locals and visitors when looking for a cozy place to eat or drink. Cafés and restaurants surround the harbor basin and the old ships, and you can, for example, eat in the historic setting of the high-rise Witte Huis.

Markthal, Rotterdam

Market Hall
Markthal

Markthal is a residential and office building that was built with a fantastic market hall under the construction’s large roof. Markthal was opened by Queen Máxima in 2014, and the exciting building quickly became one of the city’s landmarks.

The market hall was designed by the architectural firm MVRDV, and the building stands almost like an elongated horseshoe on a ridge with colossal glass facades at both ends that provide light. The hall’s curved interior walls and ceiling are adorned with Arno Coenen’s 11,000 m2 large decoration with, among other things, fruit and fish.

Cube Houses, Rotterdam

Cube Houses
Kubuswoningen

In Rotterdam you can see the unique residential building called Kubuswoningen. You quickly understand where the houses’ name comes from, as the complex’s apartments are arranged in large cubes that rest on their tips. In doing so, the form creates exciting homes and an open urban space at street level below them, where the perspectives are unique compared to ordinary building forms.

It was the architect Piet Blom who designed the Kubuswoningen in Rotterdam in 1977. Previously, Blom had built similar cube houses in the city of Helmond. The houses symbolize trees, and since they are all connected together, they form a forest that you can walk in. It is also possible to see the interior of the interesting houses, as you can visit an apartment in the Kijk-Kubus Museumwoning.

Delfshaven

Delfshaven is a neighborhood that has been preserved from old Rotterdam, which was otherwise destroyed during World War II. The district formed an independent municipality until 1886, and Delfshaven had then also been established as the city of Delft’s port. With the construction of the Delfshaven, Delft did not have to pay customs to Rotterdam, and thereby the city developed separately from Rotterdam, despite the close distance.

You can go for a walk in Delfshaven, which is still like a small provincial town compared to Rotterdam. In the streets you can see, among other things, old houses, fine harbor environments, the city’s old town hall and the Oude Kerk church. You can also see the 38 meter high mill, De Distilleerketel, which was built in 1986 as a replacement for the historic mill that stood here from 1727 to 1940.

Harbor Cruise, Rotterdam

Harbor Cruise
Havenrondvaart

The Port of Rotterdam is the largest in Europe, and the colossal harbor and its many facilities are best seen on a harbor cruise that starts in the center of Rotterdam and sails west to the port’s mouth in the North Sea. On a sailing trip you get a good impression of the harbor and its importance for Rotterdam, and along the way you can also see some of the city’s sights from the water side.

The port of Rotterdam was traditionally located in the center of the city, to which the ships of the time could easily sail. In the first half of the 1800s, the harbor began to expand westwards and thereby away from the old harbour, which had its limitations in capacity and size. To improve the connection to the North Sea, the Nieuwe Waterweg was built as a large canal that connected the Rhine, Maas and the sea, and it gave Rotterdam the right conditions for growth.

Over the years, Rotterdam’s port was expanded along the Nieuwe Waterweg, and in the 1970s Maasvlakte was built as an extension of the port area into the North Sea itself. With the relocation of the port from the center to the huge areas to the west, there was eventually room for urban development on old port areas, which can be seen, for example, in Kop van Zuid, where many high-rise buildings have been built immediately south of the city’s old centre.

Other Attractions

Witte Huis, Rotterdam

White House
Witte Huis

The White House is a beautiful Art Nouveau building from 1897, which was built with American buildings as models. Witte Huis is 43 meters high with 10 floors, and it is historically the first high-rise building in Europe. It was the architect Willem Molenbroek who designed the high-rise building with the currently unprecedented height for this type of construction.

The Witte Huis was built along the water only one meter above the surface, and this was done by extensive piling to ensure that the soft subsoil could support the heavy house. No wood was used in the construction, and the house was preserved as one of the few in the neighborhood after German bombardments during World War II.

The White House is located by Rotterdam’s old harbor in an idyllic area that is well-visited with its many cafés, restaurants and good atmosphere around the harbor basin’s old ships. On the facade you can see some statues in niches, and they represent, among other things, agriculture, trade and shipping.

City Hall
Stadhuis

The Stadhuis is Rotterdam’s impressive town hall building, which was built in the years 1914-1920 in the Dutch Renaissance according to the design of the architect Henri Evers. As one of the only buildings in the area, the town hall survived the German bombing on 14 May 1940, and you can therefore see the beautiful interior in its original condition.

Before the current town hall, the city’s administration was located in a house that was originally built in the 14th century. At the end of the 19th century, it had become too small for the growing administration, and therefore the new town hall was built. The building’s bell tower is 71 meters high, and at the top you can see Johan Keller’s sculpture of an angel.

Hotel New York, Rotterdam

Hotel New York

Hotel New York is the name of a hotel located in the former headquarters of the shipping company Holland-Amerika Lijn in central Rotterdam. The building had several functions, as it was temporarily also used as accommodation for many of those who came to the city to sail to America on Holland-America Lijn’s ocean liners.

Gradually, airlines took over traffic between Europe and North America, and liner traffic by ship was hit by downturns. Holland-Amerika Lijn’s headquarters in Rotterdam were abandoned in the 1980s, and the building was then empty until the Hotel New York opened in 1993. The building is located on the waterfront in the Kop van Zuid area, which is otherwise characterized by modern high-rise buildings.

Euromast

Euromast is an observation tower that was built in 1959-1960, when it had to be ready for the Floriade festival. The tower is 185 meters high with an observation platform at a height of 112 meters, from which there is a fine view of the city and its harbour. You can also take the Euroscope glass elevator to 185 metres.

At its opening in 1960, the tower was the tallest building in Rotterdam with its original height of 101 metres. It was surpassed by the Erasmus MC in 1968, but regained the position with the opening of the Space Tower in 1970, which increased the height to its current height. After this, the Euromast was the tallest building in the Netherlands until 2021, when the 215 meter high De Zalmhaven surpassed the tower.

Erasmus Bridge, Rotterdam

Erasmus Bridge
Erasmusbrug

The Erasmusbrug is an 802 meter long bridge that crosses the river Nieuwe Maas in central Rotterdam. The bridge, with its broken pylon and design, is one of the city’s modern landmarks, and from here you can see many of Rotterdam’s sights.

The bridge was designed by Ben van Berkel and opened in 1996 by Queen Beatrix. Because of the design, the bridge is popularly called the Swan, and it was named after Desiderius Erasmus, better known as Erasmus of Rotterdam.

The SS Rotterdam was launched by Queen Juliana in a grand ceremony in 1958 and was built in Rotterdam. The ship was originally intended to sail as a sister ship to Nieuw Amsterdam, which was commissioned in 1937, but World War II put an end to the plans and construction.

When economic conditions had improved after the end of the war in the 1950s, people were aware that Atlantic traffic was on the way back, and therefore the SS Rotterdam was fitted out so that the ship could easily be converted into a cruise ship, which was a holiday form with growth. The SS Rotterdam sailed its last trip in regular traffic in 1969 and was then in service as a cruise ship.

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen

Day Trips

Kinderdijk Mills, Holland

Kinderdijk

On the dammed Alblasserwaard by the rivers Noord and Lek is the idyllic village of Kinderdijk, where you can see 19 traditional Dutch windmills built 1722-1761. They form the largest preserved collection of windmills in the Netherlands and are included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

The mills were built to pump water from the Alblasserwaard to a reservoir, where other mills could then pump the water out into the rivers when there was low water in them. This happened after many years of problems with excess water in the dammed area, which after the construction of the mills could again be used better for agricultural production.

Kinderdijk’s windmills line up beautifully along the water, and they form characteristic silhouettes in the flat landscape. You can learn more about the function of the turbines and take a closer look at the turbines in Museummolen Blokweer, Museummolen Nederwaard and in other pumping facilities.

Delft

The city of Delft is known for its porcelain production, but it is also the hometown of the Oranje family and a very idyllic old town with cozy canal surroundings. A stroll in the center is an attraction in itself, and you can of course visit the Royal Delft Museum, which depicts the history of the city’s porcelain factory, which was founded in 1653.

In Delft you can see, among other things, the New Church/Nieuwe Kerk, which was built from 1381 in the Gothic style. Over the centuries it has been the burial church of the royal family, and the country’s founder Wilhelm of Orange is buried here, among other things. You can climb the tower of the Nieuwe Kerk, and from here there is a nice view of the city.

Opposite the Nieuwe Kerk in the Markt square is Delft’s beautiful town hall, the Stadhuis, which was built in 1620. It was built as a replacement for the previous one, which had burned down two years earlier. In the city you can also see The Old Church/Oude Kerk, which was built in 1246. With the church’s 75 meter high tower, it is a beautiful building that lies between the city’s canals.

Amsterdam, Holland

Keukenhof

In the middle of the vast Dutch flower fields lies Keukenhof, which means kitchen garden. However, the place is not a vegetable garden, but rather a lavish flower park, where millions of flowers spring up every year. Tulips in countless hybrids unfold a unique beauty during the flowering season, which will usually be at its peak in the month of April.

The idea for Keukenhof came from the mayor of the city of Lisse in 1949, and the place was to be the center for the development of flowers that could maintain the Netherlands as the world’s largest flower exporter. All tourists can now enjoy that idea every year in the spring months.

The Hague, The Netherlands

The Hague
Den Haag

The Hague is a city known as the seat of the government of the Netherlands and as the residence of the regent. The city’s history goes back to Count Floris IV and his son, Willem II, who established and expanded their residence in the city. A village soon arose around the residence, and it was mentioned as Die Haghe in 1242. From 1358, The Hague became the primary residence of the counts of Holland, and therefore many government institutions were established in the city.

In the 16th century, Spanish troops invaded the city, which in 1588 became the seat of the assembly in the Netherlands. The Hague only gained city status in 1806, when Louis Bonaparte granted the city these privileges. After the division of the Netherlands into Holland and Belgium, Amsterdam remained the capital and The Hague the city of government. Since then, the city has grown significantly, and from 1945 the city was also known for housing the International Court of Justice.
