San Diego Travel Guide

City Map

City Introduction

San Diego is a city in the southernmost part of California close to the Mexican border, and it is the city of relaxation with loads of attractions, a mild climate, kilometers of avenues with palm trees, sandy beaches and great sights for tourists. Alongside the large tourism industry, there is also a naval base and several information technology companies in the city.

San Diego’s historic sites are partly the Spanish Mission San Diego de Alcala (10818 San Diego Mission Road) and partly the old Spanish and European founded Old Town. The mission church was built by the Spanish as the first in California in 1769, and you can explore the history of the place in the visitor center. Old Town was primarily developed in the period 1821-1872. In 1868 New Town was founded and the focus therefore shifted from Old Town to the emerging area of development. Today, you can see quite a few restored buildings in the cozy quarter.

Horton Plaza is the center of the American San Diego’s so-called New Town. The town was developed here from 1868, and in the area just south of it you will find the Gaslamp Quarter, which has gas lamps in the streets with the many small shops and eateries, visitors enjoy. The Gaslamp Quarter is among San Diego’s most popular nightlife spots.

The sights and entertainment in San Diego count many places and parks. In the large Balboa Park is the city’s world-famous zoo and several museums. At Belmont Park, there are various amusements, including the large marine and aquarium park Sea World, which offers shows and beautiful fish and sea animals from all over the world. A little north of Belmont Park you can make a tour to the upscale district of La Jolla.

You should also head to San Diego’s waterfront area at North Harbor Drive and Tuna Harbor Park. Here you can visit the USS Midway Museum, which is an aircraft carrier from the 1940s which is not an impressive museum ship. The same place, you will find the iconic sculpture Unconditional Surrender, modeled after Alfred Eisenstaedt’s photograph of a girl and a sailor at the end of WWII. Close to the sculpture is a memorial to Bob Hope and his efforts for soldiers during the same war.

Palm Springs became particularly well-known in the first half of the 20th century, when the city developed into a popular holiday destination.
