City Map

City Introduction

Solvang is a Californian city that was founded by Danish immigrants in 1911. Since then, Solvang has been probably the best-known city that Danes have established in the USA. In Solvang, you can take a closer look at the architecture, which was inspired by the Denmark that the settlers had left in favor of life in America. Many chose to settle in Midwestern states such as Minnesota and Wisconsin, while quite a few others went to Utah.

However, there had been activity in Solvang since 1804, when Spaniards founded Mission Santa Inés as one of many Spanish missions in the southwestern part of what is now the United States. A small town grew up around the mission during the Mexican era, and it was called Santa Inés. With the US conquest of California in 1846-1847, Santa Inés was largely abandoned until the group of Danish-Americans arrived in 1911.

The group of Danes acquired 3,600 hectares of land from the surrounding Rancho San Carlos de Jonata. The purpose was to establish a Danish society far away from the harsh winters of the Midwest. In the beginning, Solvang was not built with typical Danish architecture, but this started in 1947, and since then the city has established itself as a tourist destination, where many guests come from Denmark and other Scandinavian countries, as well as from the rest of the world.

Today, there are several sights in Solvang, where you can still see and visit Mission Santa Inés, which now functions as a parish church, that is a museum as well. The mission was founded here because the site was between the missions of Santa Barbara and La Purisima Concepción, and Santa Inés could thereby relieve these. The mission also served as a training center and mission for coastal Indians. Mission Santa Inés is today one of the best-preserved missions of the 21 that were established in Spanish California.

The most famous attraction in the city, however, is the half-timbered houses, the village church, the copy of Dybbøl Mill, the version of Round Tower from Copenhagen and all the other things and buildings that were built with inspiration from Denmark. You can take a walk along the main streets Copenhagen Drive and Alisal Road, Molle Way with the town’s Danish mill and Atterdag Road, where the village church from 1928 is located. You can taste Danish food and buy the famous Danish pastry as well and visit the Elverhøj Museum about the town’s history and a museum about the world-famous Dane Hans Christian Andersen.
