City Introduction

St. Petersburg is a city in the Tampa Bay area located southwest of the larger city of Tampa across Tampa Bay. St. Petersburg is a city with many interesting sights and a beautiful waterfront location. The city was founded in the late 19th century. It was established by John C. Williams, who purchased the land in 1876, and Peter Demens, who brought the Orange Belt Railway to the area in 1888.

The new city was named after Saint Petersburg in Russia, where Demens had spent part of his youth. St. Petersburg rapidly developed as a resort area with the city waterfront and pleasant climate. Economy developed with seafood shipping from 1899, and in 1914 St. Petersburg was the site of the world’s first scheduled commercial airline flight with a link to nearby Tampa. Through the 1900s, St. Petersburg grew as a popular retirement and tourist destination.

Downtown St. Petersburg with its cozy streets is a great place to start exploring the city, and to the east of downtown you can visit the famous St. Petersburg Pier. It is a landmark extending into Tampa Bay with playgrounds, restaurants, artworks, a beach and more. There is a viewing terrace at the Eastern end of the pier.

There are quite a few museums in St. Petersburg as well. You can visit the Museum of Fine Arts, which was founded by the art collector Margaret Acheson Stuart. The museum opened in 1965, and the collections include art from all over the world including works and famous artists like Claude Monet. The Salvador Dalí Museum is another great choice. It is an art museum dedicated to the works of Salvador Dalí, located in a modern building designed by Yann Weymouth.

Adjacent to downtown is the North Shore Historic District, commonly known as Old Northeast. It is bounded by 4th Street N, 5th Avenue N, Tampa Bay, and 30th Ave N, and it features a lot of historic buildings. You can take a walk here and see the Palladium Theatre, built in 1925 in Romanesque Revival style as the First Church of Christ Scientist. In the same district, you can enjoy a walk in Sunken Gardens, which are botanical gardens originally created by George Turner Sr. as private gardens.
