Tallahassee is a vibrant city in northern Florida. It is the capital city of the state, rich in history and architectural heritage. Founded in 1824, Tallahassee has played a great role in the development of Florida, serving as the political center and a hub for education and culture. The city’s historical significance is evident in its well-preserved landmarks and buildings that tell the story of its past. Tallahassee’s history dates back to the settlement of the Americas, with the region being colonized by Europeans in the 16th century and becoming part of Spanish Florida. In 1819, the Adams–Onís Treaty ceded Spanish Florida, including modern-day Tallahassee, to the United States starting the present history, and there are a lot of things to see and explore.
You can begin a walking tour at one of the most well-known and iconic structures in Tallahassee, the Florida State Capitol. The modern Capitol building was completed in 1977, and it stands tall with a sleek design, but you can also see the historic Old Capitol in front of the new construction. It was built in 1845 and has been restored to its 1902 appearance. The Old Capitol now serves as the Florida Historic Capitol Museum. The museum provides a fascinating look into Florida’s political history, and the old and new together highlights heritage and progress. Across the street to the east, you can visit another museum, housed in the Union Bank building fra 1841. It is now a museum, archive and research center for African American history.
From here, you can walk to nearby Cascades Park, which is a beautiful urban park that offers lush greenery, tranquil ponds, and scenic walking trails. Continue your downtown Tallahassee tour by visiting the John G. Riley Center and Museum, an African-American historic house in downtown Tallahassee. The museum highlights the contributions of African-Americans to the city’s history. Next, you can make your way to the Knott House Museum, built in 1843 and known for its role in the Civil War. This historic house offers a glimpse into 19th-century life and the significant events that took place there, including the reading of the Emancipation Proclamation in Florida.
Leaving the area around the Florida State Capitol, you can visit the Grove Museum, one of Florida’s best-preserved antebellum Greek Revival residences, which was home to two Florida governors and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Tallahassee is also home to the beautiful Westcott Building on the Florida State University campus. It was constructed in 1910 as the administration building for the Florida State College for Women. Its architecture and the Ruby Diamond Concert Hall make it a central landmark on campus and a testament to the city’s educational legacy.
Another must-visit site is Mission San Luis, a National Historic Landmark a bit west of modern day downtown Tallahassee. The mission was built in 1656 at the place that served as the western capital of Spanish Florida from 1656 to 1704. The mission offers fascinating stories of the Apalachee people and Spanish colonists through reconstructed buildings and exhibits. For those interested in antebellum history, the Goodwood Museum & Gardens northeast of downtown is a notable heritage site. This plantation house, built in the 1830s, offers insights into the region’s history and features beautifully preserved gardens.
Jacksonville is one of the largest cities in the US state of Florida. The city’s history started with Frenchman Jean Ribault, who in 1562 sailed up St. Johns River and claimed the area for France, who two years later established Fort Caroline here. In 1565, Spanish troops attacked the fort, captured it and named it San Mateo. Florida became British in 1763 and they established Cow Ford at St. Johns River, which continued to grow when the area became Spanish again in 1783.
Florida has been American since 1821 and the Americans developed the city and named it Jacksonville after the governor and later president Andrew Jackson. Later in the 1800s, the city developed into a favorite tourist spot for wealthy Americans, and visitors arrived by steamship and railroad in increasing numbers. In 1901, much of Jacksonville was destroyed in a violent fire, but the city was quickly rebuilt and continued to grow.
Montgomery is the capital of the state of Alabama, and it is also one of the largest cities in the state. The area along the Alabama River has been inhabited for a long time before the European colonization of the Americas. Hernando de Soto led the first European expedition in 1540, while the first European to settle in present-day Montgomery was Scot James McQueen in 1716.
In the early 19th century, war broke out between European troops and local tribes. American Andrew Jackson was at the head of the victorious American army during the Creek War, which ended with an Indian cession of large areas in Alabama and other regions.
Mobile is one of the largest cities in the state of Alabama. Its history goes back to the area’s French times, when French-Canadians Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville and Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne founded Fort Louis de la Louisiane in 1702, which became the first capital of the colony of La Louisiane. The capital was moved to Biloxi in 1720, and thereafter Mobile was a fort and trading post named Fort Condé. With the Peace of Paris in 1763, the area became British, and the town was renamed Fort Charlotte.
In 1780, Spain conquered the region, which in 1813 became part of the United States. At this time there were approx. 300 inhabitants in Mobile, but soon after the city grew considerably due not least to the good location for river transport and later trade with e.g. cotton. In the early 1860s, Mobile was one of the largest cities in the American South, and the city’s growth continued with the establishment of a shipyard and steel industry.
Tampa is a large city on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico in Florida. Its history dates to 1824, when Fort Brooke was established at the mouth of the Hillsborough River. It happened after the American purchase of Florida from Spain in 1821. The settlement that eventually became Tampa arose in the area just north of the fort, and which today is in the metropolitan area of Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater.
Tampa is today a city known as a tourist resort with its beautiful location on the gulf. There are several things to see and do in the city, where the center is dominated by modern high-rise buildings. In downtown, there are quite a few architectural highlights and interesting museums. You can also take a walk along the Hillsborough River and Garrison Channel along the Tampa Riverwalk, where you can enjoy views of the water and the city.
