Troyes is a city on the Seine, the seat of administration in the French department of Aube. Its history goes back to Roman times, when the city was called Augustobona Tricassium, and where it was located on several main roads such as Via Agrippa. The population of Troyes became Christians in the fourth century, when the city also became a seat of a bishop. Later, a monastery was established in Troyes, which in the Middle Ages developed into a trading center and a politically important city.
The counts of Champagne made Troyes the capital, and it remained the main city of the province of Champagne until the French Revolution. Troyes grew over the centuries through the development of not least the textile trade and credit business. In 1420, the Treaty of Troyes was concluded as a peace agreement by determining the succession. A good hundred years later, large parts of the city burned down in 1524. In recent centuries, the city’s population has grown steadily.
Today, Troyes is a pleasant city with several attractions in the city center, where everything is within walking distance of each other. You can, for example, start a stroll at the Hôtel de Ville, which is Troyes’ town hall, that was completed in 1672. From here you can take a walk along the narrow pedestrian street Rue Champeaux, where Troyes’ well-known half-timbered houses are lined up. These houses mainly date from the 16th century, and if you walk along the street Ruelle des Chats, you can enjoy a special atmosphere.
There are many churches in Troyes as well. Cathédrale Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul is the city’s cathedral, which was built from around the year 1200. Construction went on for several centuries and was completed in the 17th century with the west facade as the last part. However, the facade has remained unfinished, as the planned south tower was not built. The interior of the cathedral is beautiful in Gothic architecture, and you can see impressive glass mosaics and a rose window. The city’s other beautiful and old churches include Église Saint-Nizier, Église Sainte-Madeleine and Basilique Saint-Urbain.
There are several interesting museums in Troyes, and during a visit you can also see some of the large and architecturally interesting mansions that exist in the city. This applies, for example, to the 16th-century mansion Hôtel de Vaulauisant, where there are two museums: the regional art museum Musée d’Art Champenois and the textile historical Musée de la Maille – Mode et Industrie. The Musée d’Art Moderne is another option. It is a museum of contemporary art, which is housed in the former bishopric of Troyes. Close by is the Musée Saint-Loup, a museum of fine arts located in the former abbey, Abbaye Saint-Loup.
Auxerre is the capital of the French department of Yonne, which is known for its Burgundy wines, with Chablis as one of the country’s most famous white wines. The city has a long history and was the Roman provincial capital with the name Autissiodorum. At the time, the city lay along the strategically important trade route, Via Agrippa, which crossed the present-day Yonne. Auxerre became the episcopal seat, and a cathedral was built in the city in the 4th century. Later, walls were built around Auxerre, which over the centuries developed with not least agriculture and wine production.
Reims is a city located in the northern French department of Marne. It was founded around 80 BC. by the Celtic-Belgian tribe called Remeres. The city became Roman after Caesar’s conquest of Gaul in the years 58-51 BC, and it grew into the metropolis of Durocortorum with up to 100,000 inhabitants in this era. Later, the city was named after the first tribe, and it eventually became Reims. Clovis I was baptized in Reims in 496, who was elevated to the archbishopric. Important meetings were held in Reims, and the first coronation took place in the city in 816, when Louis the Pious became emperor.
