Valley of Fire State Park Travel Guide

City Map

City Introduction

Valley of Fire State Park is a large area designated as a state park in Nevada. The park takes its name from the beautiful sandstone formations of Aztec sandstone, which were formed from sand dunes about 150 million years ago. The red formations almost glow as if they have been set on fire when they reflect the rays of the Sun.

The colors and formations are the state park’s major attractions, and you can enjoy a great variety in the landscape on a drive through the area. The landscape was geologically created through a combination of land uplifts, shifts in faults and heavy erosion. Sandstone and old dunes dominate the landscape, and the rock formations also consist of limestone and slate.

You can see traces of the area’s prehistoric Anasazi inhabitants as well, who were farmers from the nearby and fertile Moapa Valley. They visited and used the area from approximately 300 BC. to the year 1150 AD Their activities probably involved hunting, gathering provisions and religious ceremonies, but the scarcity of water must have limited their stay and activities. There are fine examples of petroglyphs from the Anasazi people in several places in the park.

Valley of Fire State Park was established with the transfer of 3,550 acres of federal land to the State of Nevada in 1931. Work on the park was begun by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1933, and the state park opened in 1934. Today, the beautiful surroundings can be enjoyed while driving along the Valley of Fire Road, which over approximately 17 kilometers connects the park’s eastern and western entrances.

In the park, you can enjoy the scenery from the road, but you can also visit the Valley of Fire Visitor Center, which is located along Mouse’s Tank Road. In the center you can get information about the park. A little north of the center you can walk along the Petroglyph Canyon Trail with fantastic nature to one of the best places to see petroglyphs.

Atlatl Rock to the west is another good place to see the fine rock art and this place is very easy to access. On the opposite side of the road from Atlatl Rock, you can also walk the Petrified Logs Loop to petrified logs, and there are also many other good hiking trails you can follow.
