Valparaíso is one of Chile’s most important port cities, and it also ranks among the country’s most charming cities. Valparaíso was founded as a Spanish port in 1536, and its location on the Pacific coast has over the years led to growth and prosperity for long periods of time. The city’s beautiful location on the coast has also led to a great deal of tourism, and visitors can enjoy the historic center, which is on UNESCO’s list of world heritage sites. In addition, since 1973, Valparaíso has been home to the National Congress of Chile.
The historic center of Valparaíso is a part of the city that is characterized by a beautifully preserved 19th century architectural expression. To the east of the neighborhood are the large squares, Plaza de la Victoria and Plaza Simon Bolivar. In addition to a lovely atmosphere and beautiful parkland, you can see Valparaíso’s cathedral, Iglesia Catedral, here. If you go west along the wide boulevard Avenida Brasil, you will come to the monument to the British Lord Thomas Cochrane, who was the leader of the Chilean navy 1817-1822. Further to the north-west is the city’s beautiful 19th-century center, centered at the square Plaza Sotomayor.
In the surrounding streets you will find many of the city’s historic buildings. From here you can go up the hill of Cerro Concepción, where there are several old churches. On the way up here you pass Plaza Justicia, where the city’s courthouse is located, it is called the Palacio de Justicia. To the north, the old town ends at Plaza Wheelwright, where you can notice the city’s beautiful customs building, Edificio de la Aduana, built in 1854.
Valparaíso’s historic seaside district is surrounded by ridges, and the city center is therefore almost like the stage of an amphitheater. During the city’s development, unique elevators were built throughout the city as transport between the center and the surrounding residential areas. The charming means of transport do not find their place anywhere in the world. The elevators are funiculars, but with the old rustic cabins running on steel structures, they are something special.
Among the most recommended elevator tours is the Ascensor Artillería tour, built in 1893, which runs from Plaza Wheelwright to Paseo 21 de Mayo. At the top is the city’s most famous view and the well-known Café Mirador. Here you can also visit the Maritime Museum/Museo Naval y Maritimo. Ascensor Concepción, which goes to Cerro Ceoncepción, is the oldest of Valparaíso’s elevators. It was inaugurated in 1883, when it was water powered.
The Ascensor Cordillera, departing from a narrow alley in Calle Serrano, runs to Plaza E. Ramirez. Here you will get a good impression of the elevator’s construction and can visit a museum as well, the Museo Lord Cochrane. The elevator runs very steeply, and it opened in 1887. From Paseo Yugoslavo you can take Ascensor El Peral from 1902 to Cerro Alegre. Here is the beautifully renovated mansion Palacio Baburizza, now open as an art museum.
