City Introduction

Varna is Bulgaria’s largest city on the country’s Black Sea coast. It is an ancient cultural city whose history dates to the founding by Ionians in 580 BC. Back then it was called Odessos, and from ancient times buildings from the time of the Roman Empire have been preserved. Later, Odessos became Bulgarian and changed its name to Varna, which over the centuries became an important port city with consulates from countless countries. The city became part of the present Bulgaria after the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878.

Today, the center of the Bulgarian metropolis is located around the square Ploshtad Nezavisimost, where there are green plants and fountains. You can also see Varna’s beautiful Drama Theatre, completed in 1932 with inspiration from Sofia’s famous Ivan Vazov Theatre. From the southern part of the square, you get to the city’s narrow streets with Knyaz Boris I boulevard as the main thoroughfare. Along the boulevard you can e.g. see Saint Nicholas Church from 1865, which has an interior worth seeing.

In the center of Varna, you can visit the city’s impressive Mary Assumption Cathedral. It was built 1880-1886 and stands as one of the city’s landmarks. The interior of the cathedral is beautiful with fine wall paintings, altars and iconostasis. Opposite the cathedral you can see Varna’s bell tower, which was built in 1888. The tower had a function as a lookout tower of the city’s fire department.

In Varna’s narrow streets in the old town facing the Black Sea, there are ruins from Roman times, and here you can see the preserved parts of the city’s historic bathing facilities, which were built around the year 200. Varna’s interesting history can also be seen at the archaeological museum and at the city history museum. When you are in the old town, you should take a walk along the Black Sea coast too. Here there are both sandy beaches and lovely parks.

Burgas, Bulgaria

Burgas

Burgas is the southernmost of Bulgaria’s beautifully situated larger cities on the Black Sea. It is a city that dates to Thracian, Greek and Roman settlements. The Romans fortified and developed the city, which, however, only grew substantially when Bulgarians came here in larger numbers in the 1500s and 1600s. However, what was decisive for Burgas’s rise to a regional economic center was the opening of the railway to Plovdiv in 1890 and the construction of the port in 1903.

Constanta, Romania

Constanța

Constanța is the oldest inhabited city in Romania, and its history goes back to its foundation around the year 600 BC. The city was established as Greek Tomis, and the name is said to come from the queen Tomyris, who was ruler of the Massagetes. After the Greek start, the city and the coastline later became part of the Roman Empire and then the Byzantine Empire.

Tomis’ name was changed in the Byzantine era to Constantiana in honor of Constantia, who was the sister of Emperor Constantine the Great. The first known use of the new name dates from the year 950, and approximately 500 years followed under the rule of various kingdoms before Constantiana became part of the Ottoman Empire around 1419.
