City Map

City Introduction

Vlorë is Albania’s third largest city. It is beautifully situated by the Bay of Vlorë and the Adriatic coast in the southern part of the country. Vlorë was founded as a Greek colony with the name Aulon, and throughout history the city has been under changing dominions of, among others, Romans, Byzantines, Venetians and Ottomans. The city played a major role in the Albanian independence struggle, and the country’s declaration of independence was signed in the city on 28 November 1912 by the Assembly of Vlorë.

Today, Vlorë is an exciting city to visit with its beautiful location by the water. Sheshi square in Flamurit is the center of the city and here you can see the 17 meter high monument commemorating the independence of Albania in 1912. If you want to learn more about this interesting time in Albanian history, you can visit the museum Muzeu Kombëtar in Pavarësi, which relive the history of independence in the house where Ismail Qemali raised the Albanian flag after the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Close to Sheshi in Flamurit is the street Rruga Justin Godar, where you get a good impression of old Vlorë. Right here there are narrow and cozy streets with low buildings. Close to this is the city’s historical museum, Muzeu Historik, which exhibits a large number of archaeological finds from Vlorë and the surrounding region from the city’s long history. In the area, you can also visit the Vlorës Ethnographic Museum, which complements the other places from the city’s history in an excellent way.

You can also take a stroll along the modern Boulevard Ismail Qemali, which leads from the center of Vlorë south to the sea and thereby to the city’s large recreational areas. The boulevard ends in a beautiful square that leads directly to the water. East of the city’s harbor there are promenades along the sea, and it is a very popular place to stroll for both locals and tourists. To the west of the harbor you can take a dip, because here are the long sandy beaches of Vlorë with direct access from the city.

Tirana, Albania

Tirana

Tirana is the capital of Albania and for decades, it was one of Europe’s most closed and inaccessible cities for tourists. Today it is almost the other way around when you think of exploring the sights and neighborhoods and in the meeting with the friendly people of Albania.

Tirana is a city created through centuries of diverse construction from a variety of rulers and the culture and style of leaders. The 13th century Justinian Fort once formed the center of the city, which has since been influenced by not least the Ottoman Empire, Italy and the special Albanian communism.

Durrës, Albania

Durrës

Durrës is the second largest city in Albania and is located like Tirana’s port city on the Albanian Adriatic coast. The city’s early history started with the arrival of Greek settlers from Corinth and Korkyra in the 6th century BC. At that time the city was called Epidamnos, and it was also known as Dyrrachium. Dürres became part of the Roman Empire and later also the Byzantine Empire.

In the Middle Ages, both Bulgarians and Venetians fought over Durrës and the well-located area. In 1501, the Ottomans captured the city and their rule was maintained until 1912, before the Albanians gained their independence and freedom. Durrës briefly became the capital of the Principality of Albania, which soon became part of Italy. During World War II, Durrës was occupied by German troops, and after the war, the city became part of communist Albania.
