City Map

City Introduction

Žilina is a town in northwestern Slovakia, located where the river Rajčanka flows into the larger Váh. The city is known in documents since the 13th century, and it was already granted the status of a royal free city in 1321, which provided good opportunities for further development. In the 17th century, Žilina became a large town for trade, and in the 19th century, the city boomed through industrialization and the arrival of railways to e.g. Bratislava.

Today you can enjoy a fine and cozy old town in Žilina, where the square Mariánske námestie forms the natural center of a stroll in the streets. Town houses stand side by side around the square with the church Kostol Obrátenia sv. Pavla as the dominant building. On the eastern corner of the square, you can see the small but fine town hall, which was built in the early 16th century.

In the center of Žilina you can also see the impressive Trinity Cathedral, which was constructed around the year 1400, but which has been burned and rebuilt several times over the centuries since then. Together with the neighboring building, the Burianova veža tower, the tower of the cathedral forms the city’s profile. Burian’s Tower was built in the 1520s and served as a bell tower and watchtower. Today there is an exhibition in the 46-meter-high tower, from which there is a beautiful view of Žilina.

In the northern part of Žilina you can explore the castle Budatínsky hrad. The castle was built as a fortress in the 13th century at the confluence of two rivers, and customs were levied at this site. Later, the fortress was converted into a Renaissance residence, and today you can enjoy the site, which is a museum. You can also go to the southwest of the city, where the old St Stephen’s Church is located. The church is from the 13th century with a beautiful interior with finely preserved paintings.

Banská Bystrica is a town on the river Hron. It is in central Slovakia surrounded by a beautiful landscape with mountains. The city was founded by German settlers in the 13th century, and in 1255 it obtained the status of a royal free city, which gave it some autonomy in the main cities of what was then Hungary. Over time, trade and mining grew, and this created a prosperity, which the bourgeoisie from the late Middle Ages converted into many fine houses, churches and other structures.

Today, Banská Bystrica is a beautiful city, where the old town brings visitors back to the architecture and booming economy of past centuries. The elongated square, Námestie SNP, forms the center of the old town. The square was established in the 16th century, and in 1552 the bell tower to the east was built. Close to this is the baroque cathedral, which was built with inspiration from the Church of the Gesù in Rome, and which was dedicated to Francisco Xavier.

Zlín, Czechia Czech Republic

Zlín

Zlín is a city in the eastern part of Czech Republic, known in documents from 1322. The town was given rights and thus formally became a city in 1397. Over the following centuries, Zlín grew and gradually became an important regional center of trade and economy. In the 19th century, industrialization boosted new growth in the city, and it was especially the shoe factory, Tomáš Baťa and Jan Antonín Baťa founded in 1894, which defined the city from that year forward.

Baťa quickly became the leading shoe factory in Czechoslovakia, and Baťa’s factories were also developed into industrial areas other than shoe production. In the years 1923-1938, the Baťa factories built almost a completely new town, which can still be seen. Baťa’s city within the city spanned factories, office buildings, residences, shops and much more, all built in homogenous functionalism, making Zlín architecturally unique in the world.
