The Market Square is the name of Jelenia Gora’s central square, and there is a nice atmosphere with sights, cafes and restaurants. The square is surrounded by gabled houses from the Baroque period. It was merchants and other of the city’s leading citizens who lived here and who used the spaces under the arcades that can be seen in all the houses. Today there is no traffic on the square, but in the years 1897-1969, trams ran in Jelenia Gora and thus also here. You can see a preserved wagon in the Market Square; it is today a souvenir kiosk.

Town Hall/Ratusz

The town hall of Jelenia Gora is located as the center of the city. The beautiful building was erected in the years 1744-1749 on the remains of former town halls from the Gothic and Renaissance periods. At the beginning of the 20th century, the town hall administration was expanded with the purchase of the so-called Seven Houses next to the town hall building itself. At that time a tram was driving here, and therefore the two parts were connected by a gangway over the tracks, which you can still see. There are several sights in the town hall. For example, you can see fine sculptures by Ernst Rülke.

Holy Cross Church/Sanktuarium Krzyża Świętego

This large church, also called the Garrison Church/Kościół Garnizonowy, was built in 1709-1817 for the Protestant congregation in Silesia. Following an agreement with the Catholic, Austrian government, the Protestants were allowed to build six churches in the region. The design of the church is like a cross with triforias on several floors, so there could be about 2,000 people in the large building. The interior is beautiful with a nice altar. Around the church there used to be a cemetery, but today it is almost like a park with statues and a marking of the city’s geographical center.
