City Introduction

The town of Limerick is beautifully situated on the River Shannon, the longest river in Ireland and the British Isles. The city is the third largest in the Republic of Ireland and it is one of the cozy towns along the west coast of Ireland, where there are quite a few sights and a good atmosphere.

The Vikings founded the city, and the historic city center is located on King’s Island along both the Shannon River and the Abbey River. On King’s Island are i.a. the Englishtown district, where you can see the beautiful King John’s Castle and St Mary’s Cathedral.

The modern city center is located south of the Abbey River and has O’Connell Street as its main street. In this area you can also visit the Hunt Museum, which is one of the city’s interesting museums. You can also enjoy the green surroundings of the People’s Park and Georgian architecture in Pery Square.

The western city is surrounded by beautiful nature and interesting sights. Shannon’s estuary is located immediately west of the city, and both north and south of the river there is something to drive for. The world-famous Cliffs of Moher are to the northwest, and both Cork and Galway are within easy reach if you want to see other cities.

  • St. Mary’s Cathedral: St. Mary’s is an Anglican cathedral founded in 1168. It is Limerick’s oldest building still in use, and it was built on the historic site where the Vikings held their court meetings in the city. Today you can see a beautiful and interesting interior of the church, which is located behind the tower, which was built in the 14th century.
  • King John’s Castle: This is a 13th century castle located on King’s Island. The castle area itself was established as a place of government by the Vikings in the 10th century, but it was King John who in the year 1200 had the castle built. The beautiful castle is located on the river Shannon, and it is one of the best preserved Norman castles in Europe.
  • O’Connell Street: O’Connell Street is Limerick’s main street. It was originally named George’s Street before being named after Irish politician Daniel O’Connell. Along the street you can see some Georgian architecture, and there is also a monument to O’Connell just south of the street at The Crescent.
  • The Crescent: The elongated square, The Crescent, is probably Limerick’s most beautiful example of Georgian architecture. The square was originally called Richmond Place, but was named after the square’s developed form. In addition to the distinctive townhouses you can see the Church of the Sacred Heart, originally built as a Jesuit church, and a monument to Daniel O’Connell.

  • People’s Park: This is a beautiful city park located in the Newtown Pery neighborhood of central Limerick. The park was intended in the 1830s as a green space with Georgian houses all around, but only Pery Square to the west was developed. The park was inaugurated in 1877 and here are open lawns and a large monument to Thomas Spring Rice.
  • Pery Square: In Pery Square you can see fine examples of late Georgian architecture. The 1835-1838 row of houses at the south end of Pery Square is one of the finest of its kind in Limerick and also in Ireland. The house with number 2 is a kind of museum house, which is open at various events.
  • Hunt Museum: The Hunt Museum is located on the banks of the River Shannon, displaying the Hunt family’s art collection, which was donated to museum purposes to keep it together. The museum is located in the Custom House, which is one of the city’s finest buildings from the 18th century. You can see a varied collection of everything from finds from the Stone Age and ancient Egypt to works by i.a. Picasso.
  • Limerick City Gallery of Art: At this art gallery you can not least enjoy Irish art from the 1700s-1900s, which is displayed as a permanent exhibition. The museum building dates from 1906, when it was built as a Carnegie library and museum. Since 1936, the current gallery has been located here.

Cliffs of Moher, Ireland

  • Cliffs of Moher: The beautiful coastal cliffs along the west coast of Ireland are one of the island’s biggest attractions. The cliffs consist mostly of slate and sandstone, and they rise over 200 meters/650 feet up from the Atlantic Ocean. The most famous view is from O’Brien’s Tower, which was built in 1835 by Cornelius O’Brien as a lookout tower for the tourists of that time.

  • Galway: Galway is a beautifully situated town with plenty to see. Galway Cathedral and St. Nicholas’ Collegiate Church is worth seeing, and you can also enjoy the city on many lovely walks. You can walk along The Long Walk, Kirwans Lane and to central Eyre Square, where you can see a bust of John F. Kennedy.

  • Cork: The city of Cork in the south west of Ireland is the second largest city in the country. The city center is an island located between two arms of the River Lee. In Cork there are many sights such as the town hall, the courthouse and the English Market. You should also stop by the famous Shandon Bells in the cozy neighborhood north of Lee.
